Culture Quilt

Create a quilt square that shows your experiences, values, and heritage, then join them into a class quilt.

Class opens with this

What helps you feel like you belong in a classroom? Write or draw one thing that makes you feel safe, valued, or connected.

How it runs

Each student designs a quilt square showing their experiences, values, and heritage. There are six design options and students can make more than one. Share your own finished square first, then give quiet time to draw, write, or collage.

The squares are assembled into a single class quilt. That is the whole point of this one: each piece is different, and together they make something none of them was on its own. Invite secure care staff to make a square too.

Why it is worth the period

The individual square matters, and so does the fact that it only becomes a quilt alongside everyone else's.

  • Identify and express aspects of their personal identity, values, and cultural background
  • Recognize and appreciate the diversity within their classroom community
  • Contribute to a collective classroom symbol of belonging and unity

Teacher note

It is critical that the teacher creates their own piece before the class starts and also to share it and post it on the wall. Invite and encourage secure care staff to participate as well.
